Sarasota Modern Home: The Luhn Residence

Architecture

The Luhn Residence is a Sarasota Modern home built by Ralph Twitchell in 1962. Twitchell is one of the founding members of the Sarasota School of Architecture, and this home is primely positioned in the heart of Sarasota on the shores of Phillippi Creek. The original owners, Mr. and Mrs. Luhn raised five children in the house. Mr. Luhn was a stockbroker with the Sarasota office of A.G. Edwards and Mrs. Luhn taught elementary school and wrote for the Siesta Key Pelican.

About the modern home

The 4-bedroom, 3-bath wood-frame house comprises about 2,300 sq. ft. of cooled living space. It contains many features that were quite advanced for the time period - like a 2-car carport and central air-conditioning - as well as typical Sarasota School features like large expanses of glass, vaulted ceilings, wide overhangs, and screened-in areas. The Luhns sold the house in 1969, but subsequent owners have maintained the house in its original state.

It sits at the end of a dead-end street, backing up to Phillippi Creek; with 200 feet of peaceful waterfront, residents can enjoy quiet moments of bird watching or kayaking the calm waters.

The home is just 5 miles from America's number 1 beach, Siesta Key, and only a few blocks from stores, nightlife, & other beaches. This quaint getaway includes a kayak to enjoy the pure bliss of the calm waters of Phillipi Creek and a game room with a pool table, foosball table, and a fireplace to lounge around and chat.

Currently, the home is used as an Airbnb, click here for availability.
