About Sarasota School of Architecture
Sarasota is the birthplace of the Sarasota School of Architecture, also known as Sarasota Modern. It was a design movement founded by Ralph Twitchell in the 1940’s.
Twitchell eventually partnered with Paul Rudolph, and their success attracted a prominent group of like-minded architects to the region such as Gene Leedy, Tim Seibert, Jack West, Victor Lundy, William Rupp, Carl Abbott and Mark Hampton.
What makes Sarasota Modern Unique
This design movement is synonymous with experimental techniques. It is characterized by open structures, often with large planes of glass to facilitate natural illumination and ventilation, that address the unique indigenous requirements of the regional climate.
Most of these structures have been recognized by the American Institute of Architects and placed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Iconic Sarasota School of Architecture Homes
Over the past decades, many of the original Sarasota School of Architecture homes have been destroyed. Many have been destroyed by natural elements such as storms or by a lack of maintenance; others have been demolished to make way for new structures.
Currently, only about 100 homes remain in Sarasota. These homes are iconic and represent part of Sarasota's rich artistic and cultural history.

The highest concentration of original Sarasota School homes is in Lido Shores, with additional examples in Hudson Bayou, Indian Beach/Sapphire Shores, Siesta Key, and Southgate. Unfortunately, many of the original structures have been demolished or haven't received good maintanace.
